Tom Askew — An Educator’s ACSTO Story
Formerly: Grace Christian School, Shiloh Christian School, Veritas Christian Community School, Cornerstone Christian Academy, and Veritas Academy of Tucson — Tom is a former Christian school teacher/administrator and current ACSTO coordinator
I taught in public school for one year before being drafted during the Vietnam era. When I left for basic training, my principal asked if I’d come back to teach at the same school after my service. I told him, ‘I don’t think so — there’s something missing.’ Five years later, I found everything that was missing, in Christian schools.
As an ACSTO coordinator, I work with 32 Christian schools across southern Arizona. In each one, I see creativity in approaching situations outside the box, a clear sense of mission and higher purpose, a commitment to developing the best in human character, flexibility in responding to challenges at each campus, and a passion for bringing Christ to their communities.
I’ve seen hundreds of families liberated to make the right school choice for their family once they became aware that tax credit scholarships were available.
My encouragement for parents: never be thrown off by the sticker price. Investigate until you find the right school fit for your child, and then trust God to make a way. And please, pray regularly for our legislature and state officials to maintain the current avenues of school choice available in Arizona.
